On Friday, the Supreme Court expressed strong disapproval of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for its plea requesting the transfer of cases related to the 2021 post-poll violence in West Bengal to courts outside the state. A Bench comprising Justices Abhay S Oka and Pankaj Mithal took issue with the agency's approach, stating that it gave the impression of questioning the entire judiciary in West Bengal.
“How can you cast aspersions on the entire judiciary? You are portraying as if there is a hostile environment throughout West Bengal,” the Bench remarked, criticizing the CBI’s representation.
In response, Additional Solicitor General SV Raju, representing the CBI, clarified that the agency had no intention to undermine the judiciary. He attributed the issue to "loose drafting" in the plea, seeking to downplay any suggestion of bias against the state’s courts.
The case pertains to incidents of violence that erupted in West Bengal following the 2021 state elections. State ruling party TMC and opposition parties BJP, Congress, and CPI(M) have accused each other over the incidents of violence.
